Animal Science is the study of animal production in the agricultural industries with a focus on food and fibre production in an innovative, ethical and environmentally sustainable manner.

What is Animal Science and why is it important?

Animal Science is the study of animal production in the agricultural industries. The focus of animal science is the production of food and fibre from the domestic species: sheep, cattle, pigs and poultry. However, agriculture is a rapidly changing industry. Traditional food and fibre production systems must now embrace the new DNA technologies, the demands from the public for assurance of food safety and quality, and general concerns about ethics of food production and animal welfare. Old practices will be modified and new standards set, offering a wealth of opportunities to those who are prepared! Graduates in animal science will join the exciting developments in agriculture in animal management, disease control, improved welfare, and new molecular technologies.

What do Animal Scientists do?

Animal Scientists are industry professionals in agriculture who are highly skilled in theoretical and practical aspects of animal production, thus ensuring the safe and ethical supply of food and fibre from animals. Animal Scientists work in all areas of agriculture from Government Departments of Agriculture, rural supply and stock companies, in research funded by industry agencies such as Meat & Livestock Australia (MLA) and Australian Wool Innovation (AWI), as farm advisors, managers in the stud industry, in biosecurity and quarantine, and not least in universities as academics.

Why should I study Animal Science at Murdoch University?

  • Murdoch University's Animal Science Degree is focussed on student-centred learning. Students receive extensive guidance and facilitation in developing their own knowledge base. Animal Science at Murdoch University aims to produce graduates with a comprehensive theoretical understanding of the basic animal sciences of biochemistry, molecular biology, physiology and anatomy, statistics, economics, microbiology, nutrition, pathology and parasitology allied to industry skills in assessment of pastures, soils and food.
  • Murdoch University's Animal Science Degree develops a high standard of problem-solving, communication and professional skills in addition to the academic skills which underpin current and future practice in Animal Science. Graduates from Animal Science will be equipped to solve some of the major animal production issues.
  • Murdoch University's Animal Science Degree will provide opportunities for students to do practicals in pasture and soil assessment on the University Campus Farm. In addition, students will be trained in the competent handling of sheep, cattle, and pigs during their first semester of study. Animal Science will develop true practical skills during the degree, allied to an expectation of 4 weeks of on-farm practice before admission to the degree.
  • Murdoch University's Animal Science Degree has a strong research component as part of the degree. Under supervision by members of the staff, students can undertake research projects that require critical thinking and the evaluation of scientific evidence. In this way, graduates possess the knowledge and skills to critically appraise animal studies and participate in multi-disciplinary research programs. Performance in the research project will be a major determinant in graduates achieving an Honours result during their study.
  • Murdoch University's Animal Science Degree is the only Animal science degree in Western Australia that allows students to undertake the powerful combination of anatomy, pathology and parasitology. This unique combination is highly prized in the job market for the breadth of skills and depth of analysis that our graduates bring to biosecurity problems.
  • The course of study in Animal Science is academically powerful, professionally focused and practical. The degree is purpose-designed to maximize career opportunities for graduates.
  • There is a proven strength of teaching and learning at Murdoch University. Murdoch has obtained the highest five-star rating in graduate satisfaction in eight of the last nine years, the only University in Western Australia to have done so. Murdoch delivers a quality learning environment, supported by quality staff.
  • The professional reputation of the School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences is of the highest order in Australia. No other comparable School has the National and International accreditations, and successful outcomes from reviews of degree study programs.
