What do Biomedical Scientists do?

Biomedical Scientists are research and development professionals who are highly skilled in the health sciences, particularly the molecular basis of disease. Biomedical Scientists undertake research into cancer, viral diseases such as HIV-AIDS, parasite control of problems such as tapeworm. Biomedical Scientists also have the opportunity to be involved in health policy development. See our Graduate Profiles

Why should I study Biomedical Science at Murdoch?

  • Murdoch University's Biomedical Science Degree aims to produce graduates with a comprehensive understanding of the basic health sciences such as physiology, biochemistry and anatomy allied to the paraclinical sciences of pathology, microbiology, immunology and parasitology, and the ability to apply this knowledge in the solving of major health problems. Biomedical Science graduates also have the opportunity to broaden their knowledge-base into the molecular sciences through a double major with Molecular Biology, and into statistical mathematics through a double major with Applied Statistics.
  • Murdoch University's Biomedical Science Degree develops a high standard of problem-solving, communication and professional skills in addition to the academic and clinical skills which underpin research and development in Biomedical Science.
  • Murdoch University's Biomedical Science Degree is focussed on student-centred learning. Students receive extensive guidance and facilitation in developing their own knowledge base.
  • Murdoch University's Biomedical Science Degree has a strong research component. Under supervision by members of the staff, students can undertake Honours research which requires critical thinking and the evaluation of scientific evidence. In this way, graduates possess the knowledge and skills to critically appraise health studies and participate in multi-disciplinary research programs.
  • Murdoch University's Biomedical Science Degree is the only biomedical science degree in Western Australia that allows students to undertake the powerful combination of Biomedical Science and Statistics. This double major is highly prized in the job market for the breadth of skills and depth of analysis that such graduates bring to medical problems.
  • Murdoch University's Biomedical Science Degree provides opportunities to for students to study both Pathology and Parasitology; a double unique to Murdoch University and two disciplines essential to ameliorating some of the major health problems of disadvantaged people around the world.
  • Murdoch University's Biomedical Science Degree builds on the strengths of Murdoch University not only as an excellent research institution but also as a great teaching institution. Murdoch is the only institution in the country to have scored 5-stars for graduate satisfaction from The Good Universities Guide. Murdoch has also been rated the best teaching campus of all Australia's public universities by an independent national survey of university graduates. This high standing is confirmed by two separate awards in the Prime Minister's 1998 Australian Awards for University Teaching.
