Honours in the School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences

How do I decide upon an honours project?

  • You need to decide upon a project and a supervisor.
  • Your choice of project does not necessarily compel you to study that for your PhD or the rest of your life!
  • Review the staff and research projects in the divisional web pages, and chat with any of those staff, of the honours chair, Una Ryan.
  • Look for projects on the noticeboard outside Lecture Theatre 3.24.
  • Ask the chair for an honours project list

What grades do I need?

  • Generally, we ask for distinction average in those part II units relating to the area of your study, but you may still do honours if you have poorer grades but can demonstrate appropriate motivation and background, so chat with us about it.
  • Your GradePointAverage is important, however, since it forms part of the scoring (along with your honours grade) used in awarding Murdoch PhD scholarships should you wish to pursue a PhD after your honours year.

How do I apply?

  • Download an Honours application form or get one  from the honours chair or prospective student centre on Bush Court.
  • The closing date for a semester one start is the last Friday of November.
  • The closing date for a semester two start is the last Friday of May
  • Your application form requires also an academic transcript, unless you are a Murdoch University graduate, in which case you do not need to supply a transcript.
  • You should write a brief statement on your previous studies or work experience which relate to the honours project, supporting why you think you will be a good candidate, and any other relevant information.
  • The form should go to the Prospective Student centre before the relevant deadline. It then comes via the Divisional Executive Officer to your potential supervisor who comments on your grades and why they are happy to accept you. It then passes for approval to the Chair of the Honours sub-committee and the Dean.
  • Generally, if you have communicated properly with your potential supervisor and Chair before you apply, your application will have no problems.
