Animal Virology Group
The animal virology group is a long established group at Murdoch University with interests in virus diseases, particularly virus diseases affecting production animals.

Cellular Immunology Group
Research in this group is focused on the role of dendritic cells and T cells in the pathogenesis of immune-mediated disorders of the respiratory tract, including allergic asthma and respiratory virus infections such as influenza.

Fish Health Unit
The Fish Health Unit focuses on aquatic species. We undertake research in marine and freshwater environments, on cultured and wild species, and on a variety of topics, including genetics, animal breeding, fish biology, fish diseases, culture technology, ecology and environmental management.

Molecular Epidemiology Group
This group focuses on the molecular epidemiology of infectious agents, particularly the use of genotyping tools for improving detection methods and for studying transmission dynamics. It is also interested in novel therapeutics for pathogens.

Autonomic and Sensory Neurobiology Group
Research focuses on central control of the circulation, looking at how the nervous system controls blood pressure and how this changes when people have high blood pressure, particularly when it is linked to kidney disease. The research uses a number of tissues and several distinct methodologies. These include tissues ranging from the brainstem to spinal cord and adrenal gland and kidney, using molecular, immunohistochemical and physiological techniques.

Parasitology Group
This group is principally concerned with the taxonomy, molecular epidemiology and control of parasites of significance to animal and human health, especially zoonotic and wildlife diseases.

Physiology and Pharmacology Group

The Physiology and Pharmacology group includes staff with interests in nutrition, muscle physiology, reproduction, thermoregulation, osmoregulation, and neuroscience. We work on wildlife and domestic species, but also encompass medical research.

Veterinary Bacteriology Group
The Veterinary Bacteriology Group uses a combination of traditional microbiology with advanced molecular techniques to investigate enteric bacterial diseases, particularly in pigs, poultry and human beings. The group has a strong focus on development of new vaccines.

Viral Immunology Group
Research interests include viral immunology with particular emphasis on the development and evaluation of vaccines and therapeutics for influenza virus infection and disease. Commercialisation of a vaccine marker technology for avian influenza in poultry is underway. Other projects focus on innate immune responses, type 1 interferons and dendritic cell interactions, in a mouse model for human influenza disease.

The Australian Centre for Necrotrophic Fungal Pathogens
The goal of the ACNFP is to undertake fundamental research into necrotrophic fungal pathosystems and thereby suggest and test novel, broad-specificity, long-lasting and environmentally benign strategies for crop protection.

Australasian Centre for Companion Animal Research
This centre was established around a core group of active clinical academic staff and researchers who are investigating diseases of dogs, cats, horses and aviary birds.

Centre for Biomolecular Control of Disease
This centre is concerned with the application of biomolecular techniques to medicine, with particular emphasis on the understanding of disease processes, their aetiology, prevention and control. Current emphasis is on the development of new drug candidates for the treatment of malaria, sleeping sickness and enteric diarrhoeal diseases; molecular epidemiological approaches to controlling emerging faecal and vector borne parasitic diseases of humans and livestock.

Centre for Production Animal Research
The Centre for Production Animal Research covers a wide range of research areas. However there is a strong focus on the study of infectious and non-infectious diseases of farm animals and projects which support supply-chain systems with particular emphasis on optimising animal production systems so that the final product (wool, meat, leather, eggs etc.) satisfies the needs of the consumer.

The Western Australian State Agricultural Biotechnology Centre (SABC)
The SABC is the major centre for agricultural biotechnology in Western Australia. It is a multi institutional centre located on the Murdoch University campus in Perth, with state-of-the-art facilities in molecular biology, genomics and proteomics for research on plants, animals and microorganisms. It is an internationally recognised centre for research and development in agriculture and veterinary biotechnology.
