THE ANIMAL VIROLOGY GROUP

WELCOME

Bali cattle (Bos javanicus) are common draft animals used in Indonesia for preparing rice fields for planting and are particularly affected by the acutely pathogenic bovine lentivirus, Jembrana disease virus

The animal virology group is a long established group at Murdoch University with interests in virus diseases, particularly virus diseases affecting production animals.  The research is focused in two areas.
  • lentiviruses affecting cattle, and including the acutely pathogenic Jembrana disease virus detected in cattle in Indonesia

  • porcine circovirus infections in the Australian pig herd

The research relies extensively on the use of molecular biological techniques for the characterisation of viruses, for the development of methods for the detection of virus infections, and for the development of vaccines.  The group is a member of the School of Veterinary and Biomedical Studies Centre for Production Animal Research and while it has laboratories located within the School it is a principle user of the PC2 facilities and equipment in the world class State Agricultural Biotechnology Centre located adjacent to the animal virology laboratories.
